BIS Talent Retention Scheme for BAE Systems staff recruitment opportunities

BAE Systems, who announced a major redundancy programme in November 2013 are keen to promote its employees to gain re-employment in the UK marine industry, especially in the Marine and Engineering sectors where BAE Systems skills are most transferable.

In order to facilitate the connection between BAE Systems employees and local marine businesses a database of employee details and CVs has been created which can be viewed online and accessed free of charge.

The database is part of the Talent Retention Scheme (TRS) initiative which is a highly effective tool that supports both manufacturing and engineering companies and their employees.

The database now contains over 480 BAE Systems employee profiles from their Naval Ships business area who have all voluntarily placed their personal details and CV's on the TRS system with the hope that suitable companies can match their vacancies against the significant skills that they offer.

These registrations include all of the maritime industry manual worker trades e.g. Welders, Platers, Steelworkers, Mechanical Fitters, Electrical Fitters, Outfitters, Joiners, Painters and Pipeworkers.

They also cover a host of Operations and Supervisory Management employees and all Functional Support areas such as Finance, Manufacturing Engineers, Programme Management, Quality, Supply Chain, Procurement and Commercial employees.

Companies are invited by BAE Systems to contact these employees directly for immediate or future employment opportunities.

In order to access the TRS system you will need to register your company and receive your personal 'login' details.

This should take place within 24 hours of you completing the request. To start this process, please follow the link:

https://bae.talentretention.biz/bae/company/

When you first gain access to the system please go to the 'SEARCH PEOPLE' tab and look for the menu option 'Corporate Redundancy Programmes' where BAE Systems is listed as an option.

If you're also interested in becoming a full member company of TRS, please contact the TRS team at support@wincon.co.uk.

The TRS system has a wider database of engineering and manufacturing individuals to source from and allows member companies to advertise all their vacancies as part of the annual membership. Membership is free for any company with under 250 employees.

If you would like more information about the available BAE Systems employees then please contact Paul Schofield, Gillian Thoma on 02392 724694.

'I-Port' Optimising Intermodal Freight Transport through European Ports

Marine South East is assisting the European Space Agency 'I-Port' demonstration project with end-user engagement.

Led by Aimes Grid Services I-PORT consists of space and terrestrial assets to support the optimisation of freight transport through European ports.

Building on the earlier I-PORT feasibility study a functional I-PORT system will be used to demonstrate the concept's effectiveness. The demonstration phase will assess how well I-PORT addresses requirements already identified by participating ports and terminals, port community system providers, shipping lines, truck drivers and hauliers.

The I-PORT system utilises four modules to improve freight flows through ports by reducing inefficiencies caused by late arrivals, incorrect documentation, traffic congestion and delayed vessel arrivals. The modules are:

* Tracking
* ETA and Route planning
* Job management and electronic documentation
* Dynamic vehicle booking system

A presentation about I-PORT can be viewed at
http://iap.esa.int/projects/transport/iport

Marine South East reaches into the Arctic

Marine South East has secured a role contributing to the Arctic IAP, a European Space Agency (ESA) project with the objective of developing and trialling a fast Integrated Situational Awareness Service for companies operating in the Arctic.

Activities in the Arctic region are set to increase significantly in coming years, with investment reaching $100Bn or more within 10 years due to global involvement in the changing environment through oil extraction, mining, increased tourism and shipping routes. This project aims to reduce commercial operational problems and improve management and policing in the area. Monitoring will reduce the risk of environmental and human tragedy.

To achieve this, project lead partner Telespazio VEGA UK will develop a range of value-added services using layers of geo-information and commercial data that can be customised to the needs of specific operators.

The services will include primarily satellite derived imagery VMS (24/7 Vessel Monitoring System) from the Telespazio Group, AIS (Automatic Identification System) provided by Canadian consortium member, Exact Earth, and low bandwidth high fidelity image transfer system from AnsuR, a Norwegian company. Additional maritime data layers will be provided by Stevenson Astrosat and HR Wallingford.

Marine South East will provide maritime expertise and access to potential users of the new services. The project is being carried out with support from key members in the oil and gas, maritime and tourism sectors.

Via tailored innovative & user friendly interfaces the project will provide a situational awareness service supporting the maritime environment.

The participating organisations will integrate:

* Near Real Time (NRT) Geo-I imaging and analysis
* Weather data and modelling
* Situational modelling
* Geo-location (AIS, VMS, etc)
* Narrow Bandwidth Satellite Communications
* Real Time in situ Verification data
* Total maritime picture

This will enable Integrated Situational Awareness information to be delivered to a phone or tablet.

More information can be found on the ESA Project Information Page:

REMCAP: Developing European Maritime Resources

All around the globe, governments are increasingly recognising the social and economic value of the seas: as a source of energy, materials, food and leisure as well as a transportation corridor. However the coastal and ocean environment that provides these resources needs careful management to ensure its long-term viability.

The capability to exploit marine resources, in ways that are sustainable and cost effective, is becoming a strategic priority for maritime nations and the EU.

The REMCAP project aims to advance this capability by expanding innovation capacity in maritime resource efficiency. It is an EU FP7 Regions of Knowledge project that brings together 14 partners from 6 Regional European Clusters that are highly active in the marine resource extraction sectors. By facilitating interaction and knowledge exchange across the clusters and developing and implementing regional and joint action plans, REMCAP aims to develop the clusters' ability to highlight innovation priorities, and equally to address barriers to investment.

The REMCAP project team welcomes interaction with additional maritime partners and clusters outside of the project focus area and encourages interested parties to visit the website at:

http://www.remcap.eu

Regular updates will be posted the website on the project development and emerging opportunities.

The first REMCAP newsletter is available to download from the website which details the aims of the project, the REMCAP project goals, information on the priority markets being addressed, and background information on the project consortium.

Hythe Marine Park up for sale

A rare opportunity has arisen to acquire the 12.1 acre (4.9 hectare) freehold waterfront industrial estate at Hythe Marine Park just outside Southampton.

The site also has 33.4 acres (16 ha) of seabed currently leased from the Crown Estate and there is detailed planning consent for a further 40,000 sq ft (3,716 sq m) industrial building in addition to the existing 224,410 sq ft (20,848 sq m).

The site, a former US military base, has been transformed in recent years into one of the region's most important marine business parks, securing the site's long term employment use as a specialist marine industrial estate and small office/business centre.

Located to the south of Hythe town centre on the western shore of Southampton Water, Hythe Marine Park has excellent transport links and Southampton city centre is only 10 miles to the north.

There is direct access to Southampton Water via a communal slipway. A particular feature of the site is a unique slipway hoist and traverse rail system that will allow some of the largest commercial and leisure vessels to be removed from the water for repair and service. The facility has the capacity to slip vessels of up to 750 tonnes and 55m long.

Further details can be obtained from Jon Diaper or Nick Tutton by contacting 023 8020 6344/6313 or e-mailing jon.diaper@cbre.com or nick.tutton@cbre.com

Expressions of interest are due in by 4th April 2014.

Construction of the Cowes breakwater to start at Easter

Cowes Harbour Commission (CHC) has appointed Boskalis Westminster to undertake construction of the new £7 million detached breakwater for Cowes on the Isle of Wight.

The construction of the new breakwater will be carried out in two phases, with the first phase, creating the core structure of the breakwater, commencing in spring 2014.

This initial construction phase will continue through the summer of 2014 and will then be followed by a consolidation period to allow for settlement of the breakwater structure during the autumn through to spring 2015. The contractor will then return to Cowes to re-dress the core structure and complete the construction of the breakwater during the summer of 2015.

The construction of the 350 metre long breakwater is the first phase of transforming Cowes into a "true sheltered harbour" and creates a variety of exciting development and business opportunities for East Cowes, Cowes and other Island stakeholders. The project is a joint initiative between CHC and the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) with both parties funding the work, with co-operation from the Crown Estate.

Cowes Harbour Commission will issue regular navigational information and news updates for stakeholders and harbour users during the construction process. More information on the Cowes breakwater project can be found on the CHC website: http://www.cowesharbourcommission.co.uk.

Will My Ship Run on This? Glycerine Fuels workshop; guest speaker announced, 11th June 2014, Seawork Southampton

Marine South East will be organizing the ‘Will my ship (or workboat) run on this?’ workshop on Wednesday 11th June at 2.00pm at the Seawork International 2014 Exhibition and Conference held at the ABP Port of Southampton. The guest speaker at the event will be Dr Paul Gilbert a lecturer in climate change and sustainability within the School of Mechanical Aerospace and Civil Engineering at the University of Manchester

Hosted by the GLEAMS (Glycerine Fuel for Engines and Marine Sustainability) project this workshop will explain why glycerine is an attractive proposition for use as a marine fuel and gather feedback from delegates interested in alternative fuels for the ships and boats of tomorrow.

The workshop will present and discuss the potential benefits and drawbacks of using glycerine as a marine fuel and explore remaining commercialisation barriers.

Guest speaker at the event will be Dr Paul Gilbert, a lecturer in climate change and sustainability within the School of Mechanical Aerospace and Civil Engineering at the University of Manchester. Paul is a member of Tyndall Manchester within the international Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research. Paul has previously worked under the EPSRC Supergen Bioenergy consortium exploring the environmental impacts associated with a range of bioenergy systems from heat and power to bio-chemical production. He has since expanded his research profile to international shipping. Using emission accounting approaches Paul investigated the scope for unilateral policies to reduce the UKs share of international shipping emissions and; explored radical step-change mitigation of shipping emissions. His current shipping related research, EPSRC’s ‘Shipping in Changing Climates’ project, explores the impacts of the shipping system from changes to climate (sea level rise, storm frequency); regulatory climate (mitigation and adaptation policy) and; macroeconomic climate (increased trade, differing trade patterns, higher energy prices).

As part of the GLEAMS project a glycerine fuelled marine type-approved generator is being tested to a marine duty cycle specified by Lloyd's Register while comprehensive emissions measurements will be collected by Redwing Environmental. For those who may doubt if an engine can run on glycerine Gardline Marine Sciences and Aquafuel Research will be demonstrating the test engine during Seawork International.

The project is keen to gather feedback from the marine community and delegates will be invited to contribute their professional experience and help shape the future direction of this exciting new technology during the conference session.

To attend the event you will first need to register as a member of the GLEAMS 'Interest Group'. Membership is free of charge, to join please visit:

http://groupspaces.com/GLEAMSInterestGroup/join/

Following successful registration you will receive an invitation to the event. Further news and information on the project is available on the GLEAMS 'Interest Group' website.
