E-LASS meeting on lightweight marine structures, 13th-14th January 2015, Southampton

E-LASS is a European network for lightweight structures at sea, particularly focusing on the application of composites in larger vessels. Members will meet in Southampton 13th-14th January 2015.

E-LASS is the European Network for Lightweight Applications at Sea. It aims to promote the use of lightweight materials and lightweight designs in the maritime industry.

* 13th Jan, day - visits to local companies and University of Southampton

* 14th Jan, afternoon - workshop on development of regulations related to FRP in larger vessels.

10th Vessel Efficiency and Fuel Management Summit, 28th - 29th January 2015, London

ACI will be organising the 10th Vessel Efficiency and Fuel Management Summit taking place 28th and 29th October 2014 in London. The event will look at the impact of new technologies on vessel performance.

Ken Wittamore, Managing Director of Triskel Marine will be speaking at the summit with a presentation entitled 'New methods and technologies for whole vessel energy management' which will focus on reduced fuel consumption and on board energy costs.

ABYA Practical Yacht Brokerage Course 2nd/3rd March 2015, Marwell Winchester

ABYA, provides a highly beneficial two-day intensive course as an introduction to professional brokerage. This course provides prospective yacht brokers and dealers with all the information they need to operate both successfully and professionally.

Survey with the YDSA 2nd -3rd March 2015, Marwell Hampshire

This two-day course provides a comprehensive introduction to marine surveying including types of survey, insurance and legal considerations, regulatory and legislative issues, industry codes and schemes, report compilation / procedures and above all what it is expected of a professional, competent surveyor.

The course also covers the work of the YDSA and what is required to qualify for membership. Topical industry issues and latest developments will also be dealt with.

The lead tutor will be supported by specialists in individual subjects - all respected industry professionals with many years' experience.

Sample topics that will be covered:

* What is expected of a surveyor?
* Applying for membership (what the YDSA looks for)
* The legal aspects of surveying
* The importance of good professional indemnity insurance
* Surveying from the broker's perspective
* Introduction to the coding process
* Types of survey
* Introduction to Tonnage and the Registration process
* Report writing
* Formatting a report
* Summary of YDSA surveying requirements and philosophy

On completion of the course delegates receive a course folder with accompanying course notes and a Certificate.

Ocean Business 14th - 16th April 2015, Southampton

Ocean Business 2015 will take place from 14 – 16 April 2015 at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton UK and is expected to welcome over 5000 visitors from over 65 countries.

Ocean Business offers the visitor more than just an international exhibition. The show has an outstanding reputation for its training and demonstration programme, which runs alongside the exhibition. Visitors can actually test drive equipment at sea, in the dockside, in a test tank and in classrooms.

Ocean Business also offers Offshore Survey, a technical conference and Ocean Careers, an interactive careers event - visitors are simply spoilt for choice. If that's not enough, Ocean Business is well known for organising some very special social events, and 2015 will be no exception.

Business was booming at Ocean Business 2013 with an unbelievable 29% increase in visitor numbers from the last show in 2011. In three days 4,111 visitors attended and 2013 saw 2,256 bookings for 173 training and demonstration workshops.
