Launch of the Solent LEP Marine and Maritime Growth Fund

A new fund for companies in the Marine and Maritime sector located within the Solent LEP area and the New Forest District Council area has been launched.

The fund has been created in partnership with British Marine to support SMEs and start ups that require capital investment to either grow or launch their business. Additionally the fund can help to protect jobs which are under threat.

Grants between £5,000 to £75,000 are available, allowing established SMEs to access up to 20% of a total project cost and new start-up businesses to access up to 40% of total project costs.

The new partnership and fund builds on the strength of the LEP's former Bridging the Gap programme, which has committed over £4.9 million in support to businesses and supported at least 45 brand new start-up SMEs, and British Marine's expertise in delivering a broad range of marine business support services.

The details of the new fund can be accessed at the following link:

Marine South East to explore Dual-use Innovation

Marine South East has secured European funding to lead a new initiative to enable the Solent region to exploit its world-class strengths in civil and defence markets through a dual-use strategy.

Some time ago the Government and the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) recognised that a strategy was needed to ensure that the regional economy is less vulnerable to likely decline and volatility in defence procurement. This need was increased by a decision by BAE Systems in 2013 to redeploy future naval shipbuilding away from Portsmouth.

A number of successful dual-use capabilities already exist within the Solent region including the Centre of Maritime Intelligent Systems, the Marine Autonomous and Robotic Systems Centre, the new South Coast Satellite Applications Centre, the National Composites Centre hosted at GKN on the Isle of Wight, the Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute and Haslar Marine Technology Centre.

The high-level vision is to mobilise and finance a portfolio of new dual-use collaborative projects that exploit the strong dual-use innovation potential.

Marine South East will be hosting a workshop (date and venue to be confirmed) which will focus on dual-use opportunities in marine autonomous systems and surveillance and data analytics.

Applications Open for the Institution of Mechanical Engineers’ Southern Engineering Excellence Awards 2016

As part of its commitment to improving the world through engineering, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers has announced that applications are now open for the Southern Engineering Excellence Awards 2016. Companies and individuals from across Hampshire are invited to enter.

The IMechE Engineering Excellence Awards recognise engineering achievements across the south of England. By showcasing the important work that our region's engineers do, these awards help to inform and promote the significant role that engineering plays in today's society. They also help to reinforce and raise standards of professionalism throughout our industry.

This awards scheme recognises and rewards work at all levels, embracing the work of individuals, small businesses and multi-nationals and we encourage businesses of all sizes across the south of England from Kent to Cornwall, to get involved. You do not have to be an IMechE member to do so.

Building on the success of Institution's inaugural awards in 2015, this year there are ten award categories for those operating across the engineering spectrum.

More information on how to apply can be found at the following link:

http://nearyou.imeche.org/near-you/UK/Wessex/engineering-excellence-awards-annual-dinner-2016

A black tie awards ceremony will be held at the Hilton at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton on Wednesday the 12 October. More than 500 engineers from across the South are expected to attend.

Wessex Region Chair of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Bob Walsh, said: "The South of England is full of hardworking, dynamic and innovative engineers and these awards will give them the chance to have their stories heard. Last year, initiatives such as carbon masts, innovative water saving solutions and state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities were all highlighted, and we can't wait to see what feats of engineering the 2016 awards have in store."

Steve Austin, winner of the 2015 Engineer of the Year award and SC Group's Engineering Director, added: "It was a great honour to be named Engineer of the Year in 2015. Award schemes such as these give a real boost to the companies and individuals highlighted and play an important role in promoting the relevance of engineering in our daily lives and encouraging young people to select it as a career."

Nominees do not need to have any existing allegiance to the Institution of Mechanical Engineers or have members working within the company.

A date for your diary – EXPOSURES Workshop - Wednesday 29th June 2016

The ‘EXPOSURES’* project is currently working to establish a new data value chain that builds on low-cost drones (autonomous underwater vehicles) and advanced data analytics to seamlessly connect surveyors, marine analysts and authorities using the ‘Internet of Things’ (IoT).

Initially focusing on seabed monitoring, a field trial of the technology is taking place during April 2016 at the 'SUNRISE' 'IoT' facility in Porto, Portugal. During this, Internet-connected underwater drones will be sending observations to the EXPOSURES platform and subsequently demonstrating how the output data can be used with simulation application platforms (such as Open Telemac) to simulate harbour seabed morphology. Using the EXPOSURES technology to deliver a more efficient process, harbour management stakeholders will be able to make better informed decisions about the actions needed to maintain the safe and effective running of their harbour.

Establishment of the technology will enable it to be used across a broad range of marine applications having significant socio-economic importance. To assist with this, the project partners, IT Innovation (University of Southampton) and Marine South East facilitate the EXPOSURES 'Interest Group'. Through this potential end-users and other interested parties from the marine industry, government agencies and scientific community are able to engage with the project and contribute directly to developments maximising applicability, commercial potential and fostering market creation.

Following completion of the 'EXPOSURES' field trial, a Workshop is being held on Wednesday, 29th June 2016. Hosted by HR Wallingford (http://www.hrwallingford.com ) it will cover the project's progress and consider the way ahead. As part of this, 'Interest Group' members will be invited to participate and use their professional experience to contribute and discuss the aspects they feel are relevant for the development and use of this innovative technology.

Please reserve this date in your diary and when the event program is finalised an invitation will be sent to 'Interest Group' members.

If you aren't a group member but would like to join and receive an invitation, please visit

and click on the green 'Join' button.
