Could Degree Apprenships assist your business growth?

Organisations can take advantage of significant government funding towards the cost of a degree apprenticeship enabling the development of new recruits and existing employees by offering a practical work-based degree delivered on a day-release basis.

The University of Portsmouth has developed a Degree Apprenticeship programme in response to the Government's Apprenticeships initiative.

For Non-Levy paying organisations with fewer than 50 employees, the Government pays 100% of the tuition fees for businesses with fewer than 50 employees if the employee is aged 16-18 at the start of their apprenticeship. For older apprentices, the Government will subsidise 90% of the tuition fees and your company will pay the remaining 10%. However there are situations where the Government will pay the full cost for older employees.

For Non-Levy paying organisations with over 50 employees, the Government will subsidise 90% of the tuition fees and your company will pay the remaining 10%.

For Levy paying organisations, from 6th April, if your organisation has an annual pay bill of over £3m, it will contribute 0.5% of its total pay bill (less a £15,000 allowance) into an apprenticeship account held by the Government's Digital Apprenticeship Service which will top it up by an additional 10%. The cost of the tuition fees will be paid from your Digital Apprenticeship Service account directly to the University. If your organisation exhausts its Apprenticeship Levy account, it will revert to the 90% subsidised model for non-Levy paying organisations.

At the University of Portsmouth the Degree Apprenticeship programme offers organisations an ideal opportunity to develop the skills and talents of their future workforce.

The University of Portsmouth can arrange meetings with businesses to explain the step-by-step guide to degree apprenticeships and the support available for recruitment and staff development plans.

Innovate UK funding develops technology to avoid costly ship breakdowns

A Gosport company has received Innovate UK funding to pioneer technology which can monitor the biggest marine diesel engines on the high seas and transmit a simple ‘health score’ to a vessel’s operator thousands of miles away.

The satellite-linked monitoring technology offers huge benefits for operators of vessels of all sizes on the world's oceans.

IntelliMon, part of STS Defence Ltd, led a consortium which received £1 million of Innovate UK funding to develop the ground breaking diagnostic technology through a two-year collaborative R&D project called IConIC (Intelligent Condition monitoring with Integrated Communications).

It involved two other south coast businesses, NGnuity Ltd and LW Partners Ltd, along with the Universities of Portsmouth and Southampton and the Satellite Applications Catapult.

Being able to predict when a supertanker, container vessel or cruise ship needs to be brought into port for engine maintenance can avoid breakdowns at sea, saving six-figure sums for shipping owners and management companies.

Full details of the project can be found at the following link:

Innovate UK Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund

What is the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund? It's a fund that will invest in science and innovation challenges, to meet the demands and opportunities of UK industry.

It was first announced late November last year, when the Prime Minister confirmed the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund would be a major element of the industrial strategy.

In the days following the announcement the Chancellor committed an additional £4.7 billion investment in science and innovation over the life of this parliament - the greatest single increase for nearly 40 years.

Recently the Industrial Strategy consultation document included 'investing in science, research and innovation' as the first of 10 'pillars' - a major endorsement of the value that we know science and innovation can bring to this country and the economy.

Crucially, the Industrial Strategy document also included a focus on supporting businesses to start and grow, and driving growth across the whole country. All things that Innovate UK are working hard to deliver.

8 areas have been identified as having a combination of great market potential and excellent UK research and industrial capability:

* Bioscience and biotechnology
* Leading edge healthcare and medicine
* Manufacturing processes and materials of the future
* Smart, flexible and clean energy technologies
* Quantum technologies
* Robotics and artificial intelligence
* Satellites and space technologies
* Transformative digital technologies

The Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund is just one aspect of the industrial strategy. Through the Government consultation you can feed in your ideas on science, research and innovation - or any of the other pillars - until April 17th. Go to the following link to add your say:
