New City and Guilds Diploma in Boatbuilding available in Solent

What is the new Boatbuilder Standard?

It is an apprenticeship programme designed to develop the professional standard required of people working as Boatbuilders. The model has been determined by a boatbuilding employer group consisting of small, medium and
large sized employers incorporating British Marine who represent the industry.

Apprentices undertake two qualifications that have been designed to meet the requirements of the standard and contain a robust competency assessment together with an in-depth assessment of knowledge.

The apprenticeship will typically take 48 months, with the end point assessment taken during the final three to six months.

Paragon Training in Fareham are currently the only approved centre in the country delivering this new qualification, as a block release programme at their dedicated Marine
Training Centre in Fareham.

In addition to delivering the training, the very experienced instructors and assessors can also help with:

* Possible financial support
* Recruitment and selection of apprentices
* Induction programmes in the workplace
* Assessment and reviewing of the apprentice's progress
* Preparation for the end point assessments

Special Projects

During their time as apprentices, there are possibilities to get involved with special projects whereby valuable practical skills are learnt. Just recently at the Fareham Campus, the Boatbuilding Apprentices completely restored the Porchester Sea Scout's old lugger as a volunteer project. The scouts got their boat back in gleaming condition after the learners stripped, cleaned, sanded, painted and varnished her.

Paragon Skills Marine Training Centre has been working with leading Marine employers for many years including: Elephant Boat Yard, Hayling Yacht Company, Wytchcraft, Sirius Marine and The Rib Shop.

Whether you currently have an employee eligible for an apprenticeship, or are seeking an apprentice, Paragon are happy to help you.

Very successful Defence and Maritime Dual Use event held at Ocean Business

Marine South East hosted a very successful Defence and Maritime Dual-Use Conference at the recent Ocean Business exhibition which was funded by the European Commission.

Over 100 delegates attended the event to hear from highly informative speakers and take advantage of the excellent networking opportunities.

Copies of the presentation materials are now available from the link below.

http://www.marinesoutheast.co.uk/docs/papers/

Marine South East has received a lot of positive feedback subsequent to the event, and we are now keen to build on the momentum that has been generated. The objective is to take forward a programme of activities, including the ideas highlighted in the conference discussion, in a way which leverages existing initiatives and partner capabilities.

We hope very much that businesses and organisations will want to be a part of this, to help exploit the many cross-sector opportunities that exist.

We are canvassing organisations that attended the event with two questions:

1) Would you be willing to join a dual-use interest group if one were to be created, to enable communication, seek ideas, and publicise events?

2) Would you be willing, in principle, to join a small steering group to decide how the outcomes of the conference can best be taken forward?

If you are able to respond to these questions please do so to Jonathan Williams at jw@mseuk.org

The Composites UK annual conference is a must-attend event for companies wanting to keep up-to-speed with strategic thinking, learn of forthcoming opportunities for business development and hear about new developments in technology, processes and materials.

There is a current focus on growing sectors such as automotive, and emerging sectors such as construction and energy, where the need for affordable composite solutions is paramount. Developing the workforce will be critical in enabling the UK industry to meet growing demand so with presentations from companies involved with the new apprenticeship scheme, delegates will learn why and how they can benefit from getting involved.

The 2017 conference will also engage the audience in developing a composites sector deal as part of the governments industrial strategy, thus helping to secure the future of the UK composites industry. How this links with the UK composites strategy launched at the 2016 conference will also be explained.
