Opportunity for UK companies to promote capabilities at US Blue Tech Summit in November

Marine South East and the National Oceanography Centre are facilitating an opportunity for UK firms to promote their capabilities at the major Blue Tech Summit in San Diego this November (6th to 10th), with assistance from DIT and FCO.

Firms joining this delegation (from anywhere in the UK) can benefit from the following:

* Engagement with innovative companies from South and North America, and with key public institutions (US DoD, Scripps Institute of Oceanography, NOAA etc)

* Presentation opportunity within the three days of Blue Tech workshops hosted by The Maritime Alliance and by Scripps, with multiple networking opportunities with potential customers/partners/suppliers

* One to one business brokerage session so you can meet with selected companies

* Participation in a live US/UK AUV interoperability demo in the waters of the San Diego bay, hosted jointly by US Navy and RN

Reasonable airfares are still available, and UK firms may be able to benefit from support from DIT under the Market Visit Support Grant (subject to eligibility).

Companies bringing equipment to the interoperability demo will also be able to benefit from accommodation for the week, provided by FCO (subject to limit on numbers, first come first served).

COLUMBUS Knowledge Transfer Project announces conference dates

The EU funded COLUMBUS, Knowledge Transfer project has announced two major conference dates for 2017 and 2018.

Marine South East has a lead role in the project delivery of the COLUMBUS project, especially the commercialisation potential for publicly funded research.

Registration for the two conferences will be opening soon.

Achieving Impact from Marine Research will take place 6th-7th November 2017 in Brussels.

This international forum will bring together actors interested in sharing best practice and learning about initiatives and sectoral progress in Knowledge Transfer.

The conference will offer an opportunity to collaboratively explore the barriers, challenges and possible solutions to achieving the impact potential of marine and maritime research, at all stages of the funding cycle. Training on the COLUMBUS Knowledge Transfer methodology will be available, targeted towards EU staff and funding agencies.

The second conference will be:

Making Marine and Maritime Science Count 23rd - 24th January 2018 Location: Brussels

This final COLUMBUS annual event will provide an opportunity to discover and celebrate the COLUMBUS Knowledge Transfer methodology and its activities. It will bring together
partners, collaborators and interested parties to highlight Knowledge Transfer case studies and lessons learned through the work performed by the COLUMBUS project.
This international event will also host the launch of the COLUMBUS Knowledge Transfer handbook and recommendations for European and national funding agencies to embed
Knowledge Transfer systems in current and future funding mechanisms. Training on the COLUMBUS Knowledge Transfer methodology will be offered and will be targeted towards
scientists and project managers.

Solent Skills and Productivity Investment Fund

The deadline for businesses to apply to the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership £12.5m fund to help create jobs, support businesses and encourage growth in the area is 29th September 2017.

The LEP is seeking employer-led skills capital proposals that address skills issues in the Solent area, which will be considered alongside key infrastructure projects unable to secure funding through the recent Solent Growth Deal 3.

Applicants to the new fund will be able to apply for funding to cover up to 70% of the initial costs of a project which will unlock wider private sector investment in the area.

Organisations have until 29th September 2017 to develop their business cases and the LEP hopes to see construction underway on the first projects supported through the new fund by April 2018.

Do you mentor apprentices?

British Marine with support of the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) are offering two workshops (one full day followed by a one half day) for those people who have an active role in mentoring apprentices.

Those attending the workshops will gain an understanding of what mentoring is and what it is not, and looks at the skills required to successfully mentor. The workshops are interactive and thought provoking and enable those attending to develop their mentoring skills.

The workshops include information and practical activities, including a workbook that can be taken away for future reference.

Workshop one (full day) - Developing Mentoring Skills to Support Apprentices. This workshop aims to provide an understanding of the skills and behaviours needed for successful mentoring for anyone that has a responsibility for supporting apprentices in the workplace.

Workshop two (half day) - Reviewing Mentoring Skills to Support Apprentices. Designed as a follow up to the first workshop and it is run approximately two to three months after the first. The second workshop requires delegates to bring their own scenarios and experiences to the workshop and discuss progress with peers, and will be a refresher on the skills and techniques that can support their mentoring practice going forward.

The workshops are intended for:

* Those taking on a mentoring role to support one or more apprentice
* Business owners/directors that want to draw on mentoring skills to develop apprentices and other employees
* Line managers/team leaders keen to develop their skills
* Existing or ex apprentices that are peers for new apprentices
* Line managers and mentors that assess the development of apprentices

The Workshop dates are 7th September (full day) and 7th December (half day).

The workshops are for members of British Marine.

COLUMBUS Knowledge Transfer Good Practice Guide available to download

The EU funded COLUMBUS project on Knowledge Transfer has published its Good Practice Guide to the Use and sharing
of marine observations and data by industry.

The Horizon 2020 COLUMBUS project aims to identify and transfer unexploited knowledge, generated by EU
funded science and technology research, to actors with the potential to capitalise on it resulting in measurable
value creation. Marine knowledge is generated, to a large extent, through analyses and application of the
data and information obtained through monitoring and observation of seas and oceans.

The purpose of these guidelines is to (i) raise awareness of the issues which hinder effective engagement of industry with marine observatories and related data-sharing initiatives, (ii) stimulate an informed debate between public data collectors/providers, data portal managers and data users/providers from the private sector, and (iii) formulate possible solutions to overcome some of the identified barriers which ultimately lead to increased use and provision of marine data by and from industry.

Government Funding available for Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeships - five extra places confirmed at University of Portsmouth

Small Businesses are taking advantage of significant government funding towards the cost of a supporting employees through their BA(Hons) Business Leadership and Management degree at the University of Portsmouth.

This is enabling them to attract new recruits and develop existing employees by offering them a practical work-based degree delivered on a day-release basis.

The University of Portsmouth have just been allocated five extra places that are funded for mid-September start. As a non-levy paying business that will cost just £900 per year as the government funds the other £8100.

Solent LEP Innovation Programme Fund Workshop, 4th September 2017, Chilworth

The Solent LEP and our Growth Hub are hosting a free workshop for local businesses/organisations to come and hear the new £5m Innovation Programme Fund for the Solent.

The workshop will provide an overview of the fund from the LEP, followed by a bid writing workshop which will be run by the Solent Growth Hub and will give delegates the chance to ask questions about the fund and get an understanding of the application process and criteria.

NEXT GEN Workshops Address Burning Issues in a Changing World; 24th, 25th and 26th October 2017, Southampton

A series of one day NEXT GENERATION Workshops are being held 'back to back' at the Grand Harbour hotel and conference venue overlooking the port of Southampton on 24th, 25th and 26th October 2017.

The NEXT GEN programme combines a group of dynamic international presenters with panel discussions. Opening sessions for each Workshop feature expertise from heads of UK Border Force, Ministry of Defence, RNLI Design and Engineering team.

On day one the Shock Mitigation Solutions Workshop theme considers 'How Shock Mitigation By All Means Improves Efficiency.' Topics look beyond simply complying with vibration directives or unrealistic health and safety objectives that are hard to apply in the maritime workplace.

On day two the RIB and High Speed Craft Workshop theme looks at 'Boat and Equipment Procurement in a Changing World.' Topics include Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) solutions, through life support of fleets and balancing the need for speed with reliability and durability.

On day three the Systems Safety and Equipment Workshop focuses on 'Identifying and Avoiding Single Points of Failure at Sea.' Improving situational awareness is an emerging theme. Design led redundancy is essential for critical tasks including power, navigation and communications.

The fast moving Workshop style programme brings together an international group of experts armed with the latest knowledge to identify problems that affect the sub IMO / sub 24 metre maritime sector worldwide and highlight potential solutions. The unique knowledge gained from NEXT GEN presentations and panel discussions will help to shape decisions that lead to improvements for in-service equipment and procurement.

NEXT GEN Workshop days are relevant to workboats, pilot boats, patrol boats, search & rescue, survey vessels, wind farm support, superyacht tenders, training and charter vessels. Attendees include professional and military organisations, boat builders, equipment manufacturers, service providers, classification and standards organisations.

DIT TAP Grants for JEC Composites Exhibition, 6th-8th March 2018, Paris

SMEs can apply for a grant of £1500 to help towards the costs of exhibiting at the JEC World Composites show taking place March 2018.

Composites UK is the accredited industry trade association (ATO) for the DIT's Trade Access Programme (TAP) in the composites industry for the JEC World Show in Paris Nord Villepinte, France.

You do not need to be a member of Composites UK to apply for one of these grants.

Composites UK has 15 grants of £1500 available to participating eligible SMEs for the JEC World show in Paris from 06-08 March 2018.

Closing date for applications is Friday 19th January 2018.
