Does your business need funding from a new innovation loan?

Innovate UK is planning to introduce a new pilot programme for innovation loans.

Innovation loans will offer affordable, patient, flexible, repayable funding for later-stage research & development projects with a clear route to commercial success.

Loans will be offered through future competitions to growth-oriented SMEs that are able to demonstrate that they have a high quality innovation project, that they will be able to afford the interest payments and subsequent repayments associated with a loan and that they need public sector support as they are unable to access finance for their project on standard commercial terms.

A number of events have recently been held around the country by the Knowledge Transfer Network to introduce the new Innovation Loans - Marine South East will publish more information about the new loans when it has been published.

Marine South East leads new European project looking at Multi-Use Platforms at Sea

Marine South East is leading a new European project looking at the use of multi-use offshore platforms to meet the growing demands and competition for space in the oceans.

In the coming years, the European oceans will see a massive development of marine infrastructures including offshore wind farms, marine aquaculture farms and offshore ports as well as the exploitation of wave energy among others.

The development of such structures and facilities induces increasing pressures and must be implemented in an integrated and sustainable way in order to limit the impacts on the marine ecosystems.

Multi-Use Platforms at Sea (MUPS) can represent a solution to meet these growing demands of competition for space as well as socio-economic benefits for the different activities.

However, cost is a major barrier that needs to be overcome if such integrated facilities are to become economically attractive. Experience from the offshore wind sector, which has explored the concept of floating platforms to carry wind turbines in deep, offshore waters (mostly in a single-use configuration), indicates that increasing productivity to cover fixed platform costs is critical.

This new European ENTROPI project will analyse the capabilities enabling multi-use offshore platforms to highlight where targeted innovation could achieve a significant cost reduction, and define investment propositions to make those innovations happen.

ENTROPI will also evaluate the potential scale-up of deployment, to estimate the advantages achievable through economies of scale and from incremental cost reduction as the installed base expands.

Specific areas that the ENTROPI project will be exploring include:

1. Multi-Use Platform design optimisation

2. Anchoring & mooring of MUPS

3. Monetising MUP output streams

4. Integration of surveillance, security & enforcement roles

5. MUP infrastructure for offshore operations

Marine South East is leading this new European funded project and will be coordinating business engagement activities at various stages of the project.

ENTROPI is co-funded by the EMFF programme of the European Union.

Monitoring phase for a Clean Inland Shipping project begins

Marine South East is one of the partners in a European project looking at Clean Inland Shipping solutions named CLINSH. The monitoring phase of the project is about to begin.

The Dutch led project is aiming to address growing concerns about the contribution of waterborne transport to poor urban air quality and noise.

The vessels which will be monitored for two years have been selected. The vessels will test various emissions-reducing technologies including the use of alternative fuels. The data gathered will provide valuable information about the vessels' environmental performance and operating costs.

The technologies to be tested in this monitoring phase include SCR-DPF (Selective Catalytic Reduction in combination with a Diesel Particulate Filter), Fuel Water Emulsion technology and hybrid power installations. In addition some vessels will be adapted to run on alternative fuels such as Liquefied Natural Gas or Gas to Liquid Fuel.

Compared to other modes of transport, the inland waterway transport sector is underdeveloped in reducing emissions and developing clean technology. This is partly because ships and engines are long-lasting. The financial strength for investments in new material or adjustments is often lacking.

The overall purpose of the CLINSH project is to create a fully sustainable inland shipping sector, which entails reducing emissions of hazardous substances such as nitrogen oxides and fine particulates.

The practical trials on the vessels will commence in early 2018 once all the necessary modifications have been made to the craft. Data collected during regular operations will provide useful information for the sector itself and for public sector authorities at all levels: local, regional, national and international. A full list of the vessels taking part in the trials can be seen at http://www.clinsh.eu

It is hoped that the knowledge gained will support new policies intended to reduce harmful emissions. CLINSH will also reveal the economic implications for vessel owners and operators, presenting the business case for sustainability measures.

Participation in CLINSH will provide owners and operators with new knowledge about the various technologies available and the environmental benefits they offer. Improved environmental performance is likely to increase an operator's market appeal and help to attract new customers. Several large companies have already decided to award contracts to operators who are able to demonstrate their environmental responsibility. Investment in emissions control systems is therefore an investment in long-term business continuity. Moreover, project participants become eligible for a grant towards the cost of modifications which are likely to become mandatory in future. They are acting as pioneers within the sector.

CLINSH (CLean INland SHipping) involves a consortium of 17 partners from The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and the UK. Partners include ports, universities and industry associations. Marine South East is one of the consortium partners and the province of Zuid-Holland is the lead coordinator.

CLINSH is being co-funded under the European LIFE fund. More information can be found at http://www.clinsh.eu

Warsash Superyacht Academy to deliver MCA new engineering qualification

The UK Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA) has brought into force a new, alternative pathway to engineering qualifications to help simplify the number and levels of qualifications across the superyacht, and other small commercial vessel, sectors.

As a result the MCA have pulled together a series of pre-existing qualifications for engineering officers leading to certificates of competency (CoC) which are restricted to yachts only, into a single generic qualification called "Engineering Officer Small Vessel Certificate of Competency". The details for the new pathway are covered within MIN 524.

Warsash Superyacht Academy, part of Southampton Solent University, has announced their plan to phase in the new "Small Vessel Certificate of Competence" courses over the coming months.

The Small Vessel (SV) certification is for engineering officers wanting to work on the following vessels up to 9,000kW and 3,000GT; commercial yachts, tugs, large workboats, fishing vessels, stand-by seismic survey vessels, oceanographic research vessels and Government patrol vessels. A CoC gained through this route will be transferable between the above industries.

Society of Maritime Industries publishes its Ninth Annual Review of the Marine Science and Technology Sector

The ninth survey, focused on UK companies operating primarily in Marine Science and Technology (MST) activities, aims to provide an insight into current business activity in terms of market sectors, market size and business confidence both current and forecast.

The survey was conducted at Ocean Business, a trade show held in Southampton during April 2017. The exhibition hosts over 360 companies representing the world's leading ocean technology suppliers and service providers and has over 4,300 visitors from 61 countries.

Highlights from the report are:

* The Commercial Marine Science and Technology (MST) sector reported limited growth in 2016 as the depressed oil price held back exploration demand. This to some extent is being offset by growth in other sectors such as renewables, defence and environmental monitoring.

* MST companies contribute, on average, over £1.35bn/year to the UK economy with most of the companies exporting worldwide to a total annual value of £569m.

* Europe remains the largest market for the MST sector with Asia Pacific being seen as a growth market along with the Middle East.

* 25% of the 92 companies surveyed reported an increased headcount with 53% remaining static in headcount.

Turning the Tide: Opportunities in the Tidal Energy Sector, 2nd November 2017, Southampton

The market for renewable energy technology has never been stronger. SOREC in partnership with the National Oceanographic Centre (NOC) will present an opportunity for companies to explore the supply opportunities Tidal energy will offer. This is a free-to-attend event.

The event, which is free to attend, will take place on Thursday 2nd November 2017 at the NOC, European Way, Southampton SO14 3ZH.

The price of electricity generated by offshore wind and solar energy is approaching that of its fossil fuel rivals and is well on the way for being a major part of our energy supply network.

The Tidal Energy market is one which is rapidly growing and has the opportunity to provide a range of commercial opportunities both in the UK and worldwide. However, it could be argued that in the UK, tidal stands at the cross-roads. Government policy is in danger of stymieing the UK tidal energy sector with its short-sighted approach to funding support.

Tidal energy stands on the brink of the same opportunity as early deployments of the now hugely successful wind and solar energy. History has shown what can be achieved with those technologies and tidal is ready to grow in a similar vein - but it needs the government support through its formative years.

Contributors to the conference include PTEC a strategically important 30MW commercial tidal stream project that has achieved consented status and secured a grid connection offer and world leading turbine partners., the NOC and Sustainable Marine - a sucessful technology development company in the tidal energy sector.
