SpaceWave finalise their Internationalisation Strategy to accelerate use of Earth Observation in Blue Economy Growth

The EU funded SpaceWave project has finalised its Internationalisation Strategy which aims to optimise Europe’s full potential of the use of Earth Observation technologies in Blue Growth. The Internationalisation Strategy covers a timescale of 5 years (2018-2022) and aims to establish SpaceWave as the reference point and gateway for Europe for Earth Observation applications in Blue Growth industries.

The SpaceWave Project has been co-funded by the European programme for the Competitiveness of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (COSME). The Blue Economy is a strategic area considered to be a 'new frontier' for the economic development of oceans and offers opportunities for cluster collaboration and business growth for European SMEs.

Through collaborative working with cluster partners and key technology providers, the project has identified the most promising EO technologies and the most appropriate European and International stakeholders, clusters and business networks to work with in targeted countries. The SpaceWave project is targeting four countries: Australia, Canada, South Africa and United Arab Emirates (UAE) and is addressing markets with high-potential such as; aquaculture, fisheries, maritime surveillance, maritime traffic, coastal protection and hazards, port infrastructures and sea level rise.

The SpaceWave project has identified a number of use-cases that demonstrate both significant market opportunities and European capabilities relevant to those opportunities. The use-cases have identified the Earth observation and other satellite capabilities that are required, and have shown how these will be integrated with other capabilities within maritime information services. A selection of European companies bringing these capabilities has been identified, including a wide range of SMEs active in fields such as communications, data analytics and application development.

The use-cases have also considered both solutions available today and also future solutions potentially available subject to innovation. The existing solutions give confidence that firms will be able to secure international business in the next phase of SpaceWave activity. The future potential also signposts how European firms will be able to reinforce their competitive advantage through innovation. This will be an important feature of building long-term business potential in the rapidly evolving market for maritime information services.

The Internationalisation Strategy has identified a number of tools to support SMEs including training sessions, branding toolkits, study visits, newsletters, innovation clubs, matchmaking missions, and B2B events. The Internationalisation Strategy will also exploit synergies with other programmes and initiatives already launched in Europe including the DG Grow Copernicus Programme, GSA European GNSS Agency, ESA European Space Agency and National Space Agencies.

Opportunities for businesses to provide smart energy solutions for island communities and off-grid locations

Businesses offering smart energy-efficient solutions such as offshore renewable energy, energy storage systems, smart grid systems, alternative fuels etc are being invited to sign up to the Intelligent Community Energy (ICE) European Project.

Companies that can supply electricity solutions will be able to promote their technologies and services in order to develop business opportunities to supply remote island and isolated off-grid communities including Ushant Island.
Many remote communities and islands have no connection to wider electricity distribution systems and are dependent on imported energy supplies, typically fossil fuel driven. These energy systems tend to be less reliable, more expensive and produce more greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions than mainland grid systems.

Supported by Interreg VA France (Channel) England, the Intelligent Community Energy (ICE) project aims to facilitate the design and implementation of innovative smart energy solutions for isolated territories of the Channel area that face unique energy challenges.

An 'ICE' label will be awarded to applying companies to certify they have expertise in smart grids and their solutions are suited to isolated territories and are transferable. The 'ICE' label will offer commercial opportunities, testing possibilities and a package of support including market intelligence, networking and matchmaking events, increased market exposure and support to identify funding sources. The project is looking to sign up companies within the entire energy cycle from production through to consumption.
There will be opportunities for the smart energy solutions to be implemented and tested at real pilot demonstration sites in the UK and France. This project offers businesses a reduced competitiveness hurdle to access new markets and a possible launch-pad for the internationalisation of new technologies.
The smart energy solutions must be able to provide solutions or services within the framework of low carbon energy models for isolated territories.

For more information about eligibility and selection criteria please visit:
https://www.ice-interreg.eu/

Sustainable technologies for inland shipping looking for test vessels

The CLINSH (CLean INland SHipping) project partners are calling for inland shipping operators and barge owners who are willing to invest in improving their vessel or fleet’s sustainability.

The third European tender for the practical trials of this project, which aims to improve sustainability in the inland shipping industry, will be open until 22nd April 2019, 14:00.

Measuring equipment will be installed on every ship that participates in the CLINSH practical trials, after which the ship emissions will be continuously measured over a period of at least one year. This will yield valuable information about the environmental performance and operating costs associated with the various technologies.

Which ships are invited to participate?
A maximum of 20 vessels will be able to participate in this third trial stage, with the following fuels and technologies being included:

* SCR combined with DPF
* FWE or FWE+ combined with (temporary) GTL
* Euro VI / NRE
* 100% electric
* Hybrid or diesel-electric
* Installation of electronic common rail technique

The project is also searching for vessels to serve as control group in the trial, running on LNG, CNG, Euro VI engine, CCR1 or CCR2 engine, or hybrid power.

Benefits of participation
Following the tender, the selected skippers will receive financial compensation for their participation in the CLINSH project. The ship owners will receive up to 50% of the costs for purchasing and installing the technology. Skippers who have already implemented emission-control technology or alternative fuel may be entitled to expenses of up to Euro10,000 per vessel. In addition, your participation will allow you to gain valuable knowledge about the various available technologies and the environmental benefits that you achieve, plus you will take on a pioneering role within the sector. Good environmental performance can help skippers in acquiring cargo contracts or gaining access to ports. Finally, skippers can receive compensation for converting their vessels today, rather than waiting until these changes might become mandatory in the future.

About CLINSH
CLINSH is a demonstration project aiming to assess the cost and effectiveness of emission-control technologies and alternative fuels in actual practice. CLINSH receives support from the European LIFE fund. The total budget for the project is at least Euro8.5 million, which will enable the European LIFE Fund, with its 16 partners from the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and the United Kingdom, to invest in a range of projects that will contribute to a more sustainable inland navigation sector.

If you are interested in participating in the CLINSH practical trials, please e-mail us at tenderclinsh@pzh.nl and use 'Notify Tender CLINSH' as subject. You will then receive the registration information and an application form. We look forward to hearing from you.

Training against cyber-attack in the maritime sector

The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST)’s MLA College, together with the University of Sunderland and Stapleton International, has developed an online Maritime Cyber Risk Awareness Course to help address an industry-wide lack of preparedness against digital threats.

Modern ships and seafarers are prime targets for cyber-attacks. It has been shown that bridge systems such as GPS, ECDIS, radar and autopilot systems can be compromised by outsiders which poses a significant safety risk. And it is not only vessel navigation that can be undermined, but control systems for ballast water, vessel stability, engines and propulsion can all be targeted by increasingly sophisticated cyber criminals.

The threat is omnipresent, as the infrastructure that supports shipping, such as ports and shore-based businesses being just as vulnerable as ships. As the frequency and complexity of these attacks is set to rise, organisations will have to build stronger defences, chiefly by training their employees and equipping them with the knowledge to keep the business safe. It will soon become crucial for all employees - no matter how big or small the company - to understand the latest threats, the extent of the damage they could do, and the best way to prevent or deal with a breach of security.

Cyber-security skills are not only beneficial to operations and to the staff, but also for business continuity. This new training course aims to overcome the dangers and can be completed online and consists of four modules: the cyber security threat; the digital threat using your personal information; the digital threat using your IT device and the physical and human threat.

Find out more about the course at the following link:

Demonstration of Hybrid Electric Propulsion System for Small Vessels, 22nd May 2019, Falmouth

Interested commercial users, businesses and organisations are invited to the demonstration of an innovative modular hybrid propulsion system taking place on Wednesday 22nd May 2019 in Falmouth.

During this free event, delegates will be able to experience the hybrid propulsion system in operation on Falmouth Harbour in the working passenger ferry Kingsley II. Installation and testing of the new technology is well advanced in the vessel, owned by Cornwall Ferries Ltd. Participants will also learn about the benefits and opportunities this technology can offer through technical presentations networking with the HEVIMA project team.

Led by REAPsystems in Southampton, the HEVIMA project has been co-funded by Innovate UK, it offers the potential of significant savings in fuel, engine power rating, weight and emissions as well as reduced noise and vibration for commercial vessels up to 250kW.

The HEVIMA system is designed to outperform the efficiency and emission levels of existing hybrid systems for the small commercial vessel market and should offer operators significant benefits in terms of economy and improved vessel performance. Use of this technology is particularly relevant to the small commercial marine market where many vessels have duty cycles requiring significant load changes from their prime movers.

Commenting on the new technology, Tim Light, Director of Cornwall Ferries Ltd noted, "Our main interest in this innovation was as an early adopter to trial the concept of improving customer experience through reduced noise and vibration whilst at the same time further reducing both environmental impact and fuel cost. As an operator of 7 passenger vessels, some over 80 years old, the retrofit of this type of technology is not without challenges not least of which is the technical risk and relatively high cost of being a 'pre-market' user. The involvement of so many well respected organisations, both academics and commercial, with the addition of funding from Innovate UK has really helped the project push the boundaries of current technology and to utilise Kingsley II, an iconic passenger ferry that was built in Cornwall, as the donor boat for the trial.
We very much hope that the trial proves successful technically but just as importantly in terms of the customer experience and doing our bit to reduce the environmental impact of our public transport offering, something that our Company has always strived to lead on."

The demonstration event is taking place on Wednesday 22nd May 2019, 10.00-15.00 at the National Maritime Museum, Falmouth and is free to attend. Please register your place now at the following link: http://www.marinesoutheast.co.uk/make_booking/?id=4267
