Smart Ocean Conference on marine ICT solutions

The Irish Marine Institute hosted their second Smart Ocean conference in Galway last month, addressing the global market for marine ICT solutions. The Irish marine cluster is positioning itself as a leader in this sector, drawing on expertise across many centres including the Maritime & Energy Resource Cluster (IMERC) in Cork and the Marine & Environmental Sensing Technology Hub (MESTECH) in Dublin.

MSE has also been pushing for a wider recognition of this growth market in marine ICT. Two maritime projects were funded under the Technology Strategy Board's (TSB) call on 'Harnessing Large & Diverse Data Sources', one of these being MSE's WaveSentry project. MSE also co-hosted a road-mapping workshop on maritime infomatics last year, and it is hoped that this will be reflected in the forthcoming TSB marine calls.

In recognition of the scale of the global marine ICT opportunity, MSE has also initiated co-operation with the IMERC cluster in Cork. This cluster is participating in the REMcap project which MSE is presently negotiating with the European Commission, with an expected start date of
1 November 2012.
