Seminar on procurement and business opportunities associated with the polar research ship, 31st July 2014, London

The recent announcement by the Chancellor of the Exchequer that the UK will fund a new £200 million polar research ship has caused much interest amongst the maritime engineering community.

SMI have already held meetings with the commissioning team from the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and British Antarctic Survey (BAS) for the project to discuss their plans. One outcome from the meeting was agreement to hold an industry information seminar at BIS at which the Minister, Michael Fallon, would be invited to speak.

Notwithstanding the constraints with EU procurement rules, the Department for Business Innovation & Skills is very keen to encourage a competitive UK bid for this project.

The programme begins with an introduction by the Minister, the Rt Hon Michael Fallon MP, and will include presentations on:

* The operational requirement, timeline and procurement.
* An overview of marine science.
* Some aspects of the innovation agenda.
* A Q&A session on the experiences and lessons learned in respect of the Royal Research Ships "James Cook" and "Discovery".

The seminar will be held at the Department for Business Innovation & Skills on Thursday 31 July 2014. Registration will begin at 1030 and the presentations will start at 1100. On completion delegates are invited to a networking buffet luncheon. Industry representatives, especially from SMEs, who are involved in the many aspects of design services, shipbuilding supply chains, procurement, marketing products and services, are strongly urged to attend.

The price per delegate for attendance at the seminar, including refreshments and the networking buffet luncheon with drinks, is: £50 + VAT (Total £60)
