UK Hybrid Innovation meets Venice Water Taxis

Hybrid electrical vessel propulsion with integrated motor assist (HEVIMA), is an Innovate UK supported project which is being led by REAP Systems Ltd, in collaboration with the University of Southampton and eight industrial partners including Marine South East.

Greener cars are finally arriving; now it's time to kick start the green revolution on water.

Back in 2013 REAP Systems Ltd launched an exciting new concept at the time - a fully electric power boat RIB named She's Electric.

Now in 2016 they are developing with engineers from the University of Southampton, and other partners, a clean and green hybrid electric engine, which can be dropped into existing and new boats, starting with a Venice water taxi.

Venice has around 20,000 leisure craft and 550 taxi boats serving 32 million visitors every year.

As most are currently diesel-powered Venice suffers from high levels of air and noise pollution that affects the water, architecture and health of both residents and tourists. Venice is a UNESCO World Heritage city that needs to make changes - and through the Innovate UK HEVIMA project an innovative hybrid solution is being developed to address the problem.

Interested parties can join REAP Systems for a trip out on the River Itchen to learn about the technology that can revolutionise water transportation. You can get on the She's Electric for a unique electric boat trip and see the to-be-hybrid Venice taxi boat which is currently running on normal diesel engine (but you can already see the hybrid module mounted to it and electric motor spinning!).

Dennis Doerffel of REAP Systems will be speaking about the HEVIMA project and the Venice Hybrid Taxis at a workshop entitled 'Next Generation Hybrid Marine Power' taking place on 27th October 2016 in Southampton. Dennis Doerffel will be presenting 'Developing Hybrid COTS Solutions for Commercial, Leisure and Military Craft.'

In addition, as REAP Systems are based close to the event attendees will be able to see the boat in action.
