Alternative Fuels for Shipping: IMarEST Workshop, 1st November 2016, London

Given the increasing complexity of choosing the right marine fuel for today’s shipping, the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) has formed the Alternative Fuels for Shipping Special Interest Group (AFFSSIG) to study and assess available options and to look at the range of fuel alternatives available and their implications for shipping.

This first AFFSSIG workshop will provide a review of discussions held to date and afford attendees a chance to engage with the group to provide input to update and edit scenarios developed.

The world has become an increasing difficult environment for shipping. A challenging economic climate combined with tightening environmental legislation will continue to lead to profound changes in how shipping operates, including permissible fuel usage. Where the initial focus, with regards to environmental legislation, has been focused on sulphur oxides (SOx) and nitrous oxides (NOx) international treaties aimed at mitigating climate change will see greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2) included. This will inevitably increasingly limit the type of fuels that can be used by ships.

This workshop is aimed at ship owners, ship managers, marine consultants and individuals with experience in shipping operations. It will be of interest to all those who work with marine fuels and need to understand ways to comply with the new regulations and evaluate the available solutions.

The workshop will allow delegates to interact with both experts in the field and other delegates from various backgrounds.
