After 4 years Marine South East’s Knowledge Network ‘EDSnet’ drew to a close in January 2010.
Throughout its life the Environmental Decision Support Network has developed new collaborations between universities, research establishments, regulatory bodies and businesses to exploit research opportunities and catalyse collaboration.
Through EDSnet, Marine Southeast has built partnerships to bid for and win €7m of funding for a range of collaborative projects.
Key achievements of the EDSnet have included:
Identification of capability gaps in the environmental risk management arena and submission of three EU collaborative research proposals to address these
Cooperation with a variety of leading-edge research programmes, networks and bids in the field of environmental decision support, including EU and UK initiatives
Development of awareness of important growth markets, especially useful for SME members who mostly lack market knowledge outside their current business areas
Maintenance of a dynamic network of expert organisations willing to collaborate, and to share ideas with others whom they trust as a result of regular EDSnet participation.
As EDSnet ends Marine Southeast is launching a new Marine Energy Resources, Exploitation & Use (MEREX) Knowledge Network. Also part of SEEDA’s Knowledge Network Programme (KNP), MEREX will facilitate a number of Industry Groups to explore the feasibility of novel developments in key growth markets, including:
· Hybrid marine propulsion & auxiliary systems
· Port facilities to valorise waste streams
· Ship systems to minimise fuel use
